Middle School Language Arts Milestones

Sixth Grade Students will be able to:

  • read narratives and expository text aloud with proper fluency, pacing, intonation, and expression
  • determine author’s conclusion
  • create multiple-paragraph compositions
  • revise writing to improve organization and consistency of ideas between paragraphs
  • write expository compositions
  • use simple, compound, and compound-complex sentences
  • to use correct capitalization

Seventh Grade Students will be able to:

  • identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes in prose and poetry
  • use knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes
  • clarify word meanings
  • use note-taking, outlining, and summarizing
  • compare and contrast
  • revise writing for word choice; appropriate organization; consistent point of view; and transition between paragraphs, passages, and ideas
  • write responses to literature
  • use correct and varied sentence types
  • edit manuscripts to ensure correct usage of grammar
  • use correct capitalization and punctuation

Eighth Grade Students will be able to:

  • prepare bibliography of reference materials for reports
  • generates relevant questions about reading on issues that can be researched.
  • use primary and secondary sources
  • use clear questions and suitable research methods to present evidence
  • develop main ideas within the body of the composition through supporting evidence
  • use appropriate conventions when writing
